Markus Klinko is an artist whose work explores glamour, mythology, and the creation of contemporary iconography. Drawing from cinema, music, fashion, and popular culture, he creates photographs that have become part of the cultural memory of the early twenty-first century.

Born in Switzerland, Klinko was originally trained as a classical harpist at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. He recorded for EMI Classics, received the Grand Prix du Disque, and performed internationally before a hand injury abruptly ended his musical career in 1994.

Turning to photography, he developed a distinctive aesthetic that attracted the attention of Isabella Blow, Ingrid Sischy, Iman, and David Bowie. From there, he went on to create enduring works associated with figures such as Bowie, Beyoncé, and Mariah Carey, including the celebrated album covers Heathen, Dangerously in Love, and The Emancipation of Mimi.

Today, Klinko’s practice is increasingly viewed through the lens of cultural mythology, image-making, and the transformation of public figures into modern archetypes. His photographs are held in major private collections and in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A documentary currently in production traces his journey from award-winning classical musician to one of the most influential image-makers of his generation.
